Operator Training

Confidence in Your System, Day One

Whether you are operating a brand-new system or stepping into an existing facility, Mercer Controls provides hands-on operator training to help you understand how your system works and how to run it with confidence. Our training is practical, straightforward, and tailored to your specific facility.

We train operators on systems we install as well as systems installed by others.

On-Site, System-Specific Training

Our team comes on site, reviews your equipment and controls, and explains how everything works together. Training can include:

  • System operation and process overview
  • Control panels, PLCs, and HMI/SCADA navigation
  • Alarms, setpoints, and normal operating conditions
  • Communications and system integration basics
  • Basic troubleshooting and operator-level repairs

Training is customized to your experience level and operational needs.

Who This Is For

  • A new operator who has just taken over a plant, a well field or a collection system
  • A city or district that has inherited a system with no documentation and nobody left who ran it
  • A crew commissioning a new panel, SCADA system or treatment process
  • An experienced operator who has never been shown what the controls are actually capable of
  • A team that has been working around the same problem for years because nobody ever explained the fix

The Gap Is Usually the Handover, Not the Operator

In most systems we walk into, the equipment is fine and the knowledge is missing. The person who knew which breaker fed what, why a setpoint sits where it does and what that alarm really means retired, moved on, or left for a bigger city — and none of it was ever written down.

New operators end up running the plant by pattern recognition. That works right up until the day something behaves differently, and then it is three in the morning and nobody knows which of two pumps is safe to start. Training closes that gap standing at the panel, not sitting in a classroom.

The Questions We Get Asked Most

If your operators cannot answer these about your system, that is what a session is for:

  • What do I do first when a high level alarm comes in at 2 a.m.?
  • Which faults can I safely reset myself, and which ones mean call somebody?
  • How do I put a pump in hand without losing the other one?
  • How do I acknowledge an alarm without losing the record that it happened?
  • What does this setpoint actually do, and what happens if I get it wrong?
  • How do I read the trend to work out what happened overnight?
  • Why does this pump keep short-cycling?
  • What should I check before I call for service?

How a Session Runs

On site, at your panel, on your screens. We walk the equipment with your operators, open the enclosure, work through the SCADA screens they use every day, and go through the alarms and faults they are most likely to meet. Sessions are sized to your crew and their experience — a new hire needs a different day than a crew that has run the plant for a decade.

It is worth booking a second visit after a season of running the system. That is usually when the better questions turn up, once operators have seen the plant behave in a way the first session did not cover. In between, the number on the emergency line is the same one you already have.

Built for Real-World Operations

Our goal is to give operators the tools and understanding they need to run their facilities safely and efficiently. By the end of a training session, operators know what their system is doing, how to respond to common issues, and when to call for support.
